IS YOUR ICE CREAM REALLY MADE ON PREMISE IN EACH CAFFE DEMETRE?
Absolutely. Each Caffé Demetre has been set up with equipment to prepare and harden ice cream in small batches using Caffé Demetre original recipes. While ice cream is extracted from the machines, inclusions such as nuts and chocolate chips are added in. Real cream and a lower amount of sugar are used to make a formulated mix which is pasteurized and homogenized “to spec” for Caffé Demetre by a local dairy. During our manufacturing process we freeze our mix with flavours, emulsions, real melted chocolates and other “goodies” to create the smoothest ice cream imaginable. Then we take the finished product and fast-freeze it overnight, down to -40 degrees F. The next day the ice cream is tempered to a “scoopable” consistency and served in our cafes. Because the product is not exposed to “heat shock” (melting and refreezing -many times over when ice cream sits on loading docks and truck bays -such as store bought ice cream) it remains smooth, rich and creamy. Our stores currently make 65,000 litres of Ice Cream annually. Our Iced Cream is truly an artisan product and we take great pride in making it for you.

WHY DO YOU MISSPELL ICE CREAM IN YOUR MENU AS “ICED CREAM”?
Ice cream in the good-old-days was originally known as “Iced Cream”. Since we are particularly finicky about our Ice Cream and take pride in our reputation for making it on premise in each location, we refer to it as ICED CREAM.

WHY CAN'T I SEE THE INSIDE OF THIS YOUR MENU ON THIS WEBSITE?
Due to world-wide internet piracy, we have no other alternative but to limit the actual contents of our menu selections to protect our trademark and other proprietary marks. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience; however an evening out to any of our locations to experience this menu in person is worth the trip and highly recommended!
DO YOUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN PEANUTS?
Because of the nature of our business, some of our products may have come into contact with peanuts and other nuts. We also manufacture iced cream containing peanuts and other nuts. Also, Cakes and Pies are made by bakeries off the premises and may have been exposed to nut ingredients. If you or anyone in your party is allergic to nuts you are strongly advised to take the necessary precautions for your safety.
DO YOUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN GELATIN?
Yes, marshmallows & white chocolate sauce. The gelatin in the marshmallow is animal-based from pork.

WHY DID YOU EXCLUDE MY FAVOURITE ICE CREAM FLAVOUR “BANANA MOCHA CHIMP” FROM YOUR CURRENT FLAVOUR OFFERINGS?
Although various iced cream flavours are a huge personal hit for many of our customers, there are factors that weigh heavily on their viability in new menu implementations. For example: health and safety concerns of ingredients and/or their preparation; some ingredients are no longer available; weekly consumption is less that 1 pail (11 litres) a week; limited frozen storage and the need to eliminate the poorest sellers to make way for new flavours. In the case of Banana Mocha Chimp, it was all of the above.

DO DAIRY FOODS SUCH AS YOUR ICE CREAM CONTAIN TRANS FAT?
Yes, all dairy foods have naturally occurring trans fat. The key difference here is natural and not man-made. However, the level of trans fat in dairy foods and dairy ingredients is naturally very low. In virtually all dairy products, the amount per serving is less than the labeling threshold recently set by the Food and Drug Administration, which is 0.5 grams per serving. In product formulations using dairy ingredients, total trans fat will depend on the percentage of dairy ingredients in the formula, serving size and the trans fat contribution from all ingredients.

DO ANY OTHER PRODUCTS ON YOUR MENU CONTAIN TRANS FAT?
Yes. Unfortunately, as the case with most baked goods, our cakes, cheesecakes and pies do contain transfats. Some of our inclusions such as Oreo cookies and fudge brownies also contain transfats. If you are concerned about this, you should avoid ordering these items and/or exclude them as toppings on your desserts. Most transfats are found in baked goods.
Fortunately, your best alternatives are Caffé Demetre’s 2 best sellers: “THE LAST STRAW” OR “UNFORBIDEEN FRUITS” CREPE OR WAFFLE, which are topped with fresh fruit. The Good News however, is that we are currently seeking out new ingredients without tranfats and will be eliminating man-made transfats in most of our offerings in our upcoming Dessert Menu.
WHY DON’T YOU OFFER DIET OR CALORIE REDUCED ITEMS?
We tried this in previous menu versions, but realized that sales for these items were only .5% of our total sales. In other words, our customers were trying to tell us that when they visit Caffé Demetre, they want to indulge and reward themselves in some small way.
WHY DON’T YOU OFFER FROZEN YOGURT, GELATO OR OTHER CALORIE REDUCED FROZEN TREATS?
Frozen Yogurt or Sorbet (or even Gelato) do have lower fat contents but will almost always contain more sugar than our ice cream does. Every good ice cream manufacturer knows that when you lower the content of fat you need to replace it with other ingredients such as sugar, corn syrup solids or other ingredients to replace the mouth feel of fat.
I AM ON A DIET, WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST I ORDER?
“And lead us not into temptation…” If you are on a diet, we suggest you skip Caffé Demetre altogether –unless of course you have a tremendous amount of willpower. Most often the problem is that it is difficult to stay on a diet while others at our table have ordered any of our sweet indulgences. However, there are alternative strategies that one who is dieting can fall back on: For example:
1. ►Skip the real whipped cream on desserts or beverages.
2. ►Order Cappuccinos with skim milk. Lattes contain more milk than Cappuccinos do.
3. ►Sharing an item means that it has 50% less calories!
4. ►Order a Fresh Fruit cup.
5. ►Order 1 scoop of Vanilla Honey Iced Cream without the whip cream, cherry or waffle wafer.
6. ►Reduce your carbohydrate allowance during the day and replace it with items from any of the strategies listed above.
7. ►Keep your metabolism on high speed by exercising and building lean muscle mass. This long-term strategy with not only guarantee weight loss, it will also reduce your reliance on fad and yo-yo dieting.
